Kevin Toohig a
committee member for charity events We live in a world governed by a capitalistic
system people are forced to sell their lives or a fraction of it in exchange of
money, we now have in front of us a division of class and status. At one hand
there are privileged people who have a central role in the cycle of the
industry as they own the infrastructures and on the other hand there is the
working class.
As the
industry has expanded and the global community as we see it has expanded and
established trade terms, the divide between the ruling elites and working class
has also expanded like never before. The gap between the rich and the poor has
increased, it seems that the rich has become richer and the poor has become
poorer. Those who were unable to adapt the rapid developments of the market and
the increasing demands of the employers were not able to stay in the labor
market and were subsequently thrown out of competition.
As ironic
it might seem, humans are now seen as a commodity and each and every one of us
has a fair value. Personal integrity seems to have no value and traditional
values of brotherhood, generosity and simplicity have been replaced with market
values of competitive advantage, productivity and wealth accumulation, in other
words jealousy, exploitation and greed.
With such
cutthroat values in heart of society, its underprivileged segment is left
hopeless and helpless, however what we fail to realize that how important it is
for a society to develop a healing mechanism. A mechanism is needed which helps
people who are unable to survive in harsh circumstance which is a result of the
unrealistic system we have imposed on our selves which favor a selected few.
We need
to consider charity as a duty for those who have earnings in excess to their
needs or else the poor would have no relief in their lives. It must be kept in
mind that the system which governs human relations can only be held responsible
for the task as no other body would show sincerity neither can it be held
accountable for dealing with the issue.
Otherwise
the poor and underprivileged segments of the society would forcefully indulge
in activities like crime, violence and corruption. Children belonging to lower
income groups are generally regarded as children at risk, this term is rather
alarming and shows how uncertain their future is and if they are not provided
with better if not equal opportunities to progress in life, they would soon
become harmful for the society.
With
charity being done at national level countries can make sure that basic human
rights like education, health and justice are made available to those spending
life below poverty level. Kevin Toohig
